Home/About

Built on steel.Driven by what's next.

Since 1968, POSCO has grown from a single steelworks on the coast of Pohang into one of the world's leading steelmakers — and we're only getting started.

Our story

“We don't just make steel. We make the material that lets a society build its future — and now, the steel that lets it build that future without carbon.”

POSCO's commitment for the next half-century

POSCO began in 1968 as Pohang Iron and Steel Company, created to supply the steel a fast-growing Korea needed for its roads, ships, cars and cities. In 1973, the first blast furnace at Pohang poured molten iron — the start of a story that would reshape a national economy.

Over the decades we added the vast Gwangyang Works, pioneered our own ironmaking technology, FINEX, and built a reputation for high-grade steels trusted by automakers, shipbuilders and energy companies around the world.

Today POSCO is the core steel company of POSCO Group. Our next chapter is the biggest yet: moving from coal to hydrogen with HyREX, and from experience-driven operations to intelligent, data-driven steelworks.

What drives us

Four commitments behind every coil.

Our vision — Better World with Green Steel — rests on four commitments that guide how we make steel and how we work with partners.

Uncompromising quality

World-class steels engineered to the exact needs of the industries that rely on us.

Green transition

Leading steel's shift to low-carbon production, from Greenable products today to HyREX tomorrow.

Intelligent innovation

AI, digital twins and smart factories that make every tonne better than the last.

Shared growth

Growing together with customers, suppliers and the communities around our works.

History

From a sandy coast to a hydrogen future.

Key moments that made POSCO — and the milestones still ahead.

1968

Pohang Iron and Steel Company is founded

A bold national project begins on the coast of Pohang to give Korea its own integrated steelworks.

1973

First molten iron at Pohang

Pohang Works' first blast furnace comes online, and Korean industry gains a homegrown supply of steel.

1987

Gwangyang Works begins operating

A second integrated steelworks on the southern coast greatly expands POSCO's capacity and reach.

2002

A new name: POSCO

The company formally adopts the name POSCO, carrying the blue POSCO identity introduced the year before.

2007

FINEX goes commercial

POSCO's own fluidized-bed ironmaking process enters commercial operation — later the foundation of HyREX.

2022

POSCO Holdings is established

The group adopts a holding-company structure, with POSCO as its core steel company.

2028

HyREX demonstration plant

A 300,000-tonne-per-year hydrogen-reduction demonstration facility is planned for Pohang.

2050

Carbon-neutral steel

The goal: blast furnaces at Pohang and Gwangyang converted to hydrogen-based steelmaking.
